Julie & Julia: a Hollywood Moment for YOU!

I’m not able to make it to Los Angeles for an exclusive screening of Julie and Julia Movie, but would love to choose one of you to be my correspondent, travel paid for! If you’re free this Thursday, July 9th – watch the video!

About Julie and Julia Movie:

“Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and Julie Powell (Amy Adams) are featured in writer-director Nora Ephron’s adaptation of two bestselling memoirs: Powell’s Julie & Julia and My Life in France, by Julia Child with Alex Prud’homme. Based on two true stories, Julie & Julia intertwines the lives of two women who, though separated by time and space, are both at loose ends…until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.” ~Columbia Pictures

The event takes place on Thursday, July 9th (yes, this Thurs)

  • Exclusive screening of movie at the Arclight Theater on Sunset (movie doesn’t premiere until August…you’re getting a private screening!)
  • Cooking demontration
  • Meet Julie Powell, Susan Spungen and Le Cordon Bleu Celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey at the California School of Culinary Arts, Hollywood
  • Food styling how-to
  • Discussion about Julia Child and movie
  • After this event (closer to the date of premier), there will be opportunities for interviews with the stars of Julie and Julia, movie tickets as giveaways.

So are you free this week? Here’s what I’m looking for:

  • A food blogger to be the Steamy Kitchen correspondent – attend all of the events for that day, take photos, short video clips (optional). Would love for you to grab a couple of fantastic recipes to share from the cooking demonstration.
  • Be a guest blogger on Steamy Kitchen, write a post on your trip and the event!
  • If you’re in Los Angeles, great! No flights necessary. If you’re not in LA, Sony Pictures will take care of your airfare, hotel for 2 nights and car transportation.

Are you available? Please only enter if you’re seriously interested and available. Because if I choose you and then find out you can’t go…I will come over and pour wine on your keyboard. Enter in the comments (don’t email me)

If you don’t want to enter, but just want to comment with something nice like throwing your support for a particular person, go ahead. I’m all ears.

If you have nothing nice to say, go stuff a chicken. A smelly one.

Tell me in 100 words or less, why we should pick YOU! I’m looking for someone with a fun voice, who can take decent photos and can FedEx me a Kogi BBQ taco! <- just kidding. You don’t have to be a chef, professional writer, photographer or anything. Just someone FUN with genuine enthusiasm and love for food.

I’ll email the winner directly Monday evening by 7pm EST. You’ve gotta respond back to me ASAP because we’ve got so little time to coordinate travel!

Update: 7PM THE WINNER HAS BEEN CHOSEN!!

Kristina Vanni’s blog of the premier would make me a life-long devotee of your blog. As a Brooklynite who has neither met nor seen Kristina perform, I will simply say that her initial plea to attend and report on your behalf was all I need to know about this sistah in the kitchah! I would love to read about her experiences and hope that she has the chance to report on this awesome premier. Thansk!

  2. Eve — 7/6/09 @ 3:08 pm

One more thing: The name is Julia Child. Child. Singular. Child. Argh.

  3. Ilya — 7/6/09 @ 3:20 pm

Alejandra is definably my choice to be your correspondent. One look at her website and it is instantly clear that she has passion and the ability to convey it. I have no doubt that she will put all her focus and energy into this assignment, since she doesn’t operate at any other level. Alejandra will bring class and enthusiasm, along with the encyclopedic knowledge of cooking that she possesses.

  4. Vidamar — 7/6/09 @ 3:25 pm

    Hi!

I’d love to be The Steamy Kitchen Correspondent for the preview of Julia/Julia! While I am new to the world of blogging, I know what you want. You want to see and taste the food through my words, and have the pictures provide the visuals! I am a home chef, with friends who keep coming back for more!

My digital camera is ready to go with me, and I have an extra 8GB card for extra pictures. Pick me and you’ll get to see it all! I’m sorry you can’t go, but I will make sure you don’t miss a thing!

  7. Michelle — 7/6/09 @ 3:34 pm

I nominate Alejandra!! Look at her website and you will just know she is the right person for the job!

  8. Betty Vazquez — 7/6/09 @ 3:39 pm

I would be delited to nominate Alejandra of Always Order Dessert.

Her culinary kills are awesome and she is very profesional dedicated to her blog. What I love most about her is her passion and drive for cooking. Combining her approach to classic comfort foods along with her passion for unique flavors. She really enjoys every minute of it.

That is what makes me nominate her for this great opportunity. I know for sure she will make a great impression as your correspondent.

Here is her food blog http://www.alwaysorderdessert.com.
    Please check her out!

It’s got to be Lorna Yee

  10. Becky Selengut — 7/6/09 @ 3:41 pm

I second, third, fourth Lorna Yee. If you have any doubts as to her brilliance and zest for life, check out her dog’s twitter account @kimcheethepup (Please, only if you are over 18)

  11. Carmen Martinez — 7/6/09 @ 3:45 pm

My daughter made me a Queenie addict!!
    Vote for Meg Blocker!!

  12. Karen Kay — 7/6/09 @ 3:45 pm

Hey there food goddess! I am a big fan of your Steeeeamy website! I would be a terrific food correspondent for your L.A. gig. I love creative cooking, colorful photography, and girly Nora Ephron movies!
I like my martinis stirred, not shaken, with a fresh peach slice. Thank you for the opportunity!

  13. Laney — 7/6/09 @ 3:49 pm

I would love to represent you at the screening. I am not a professional writer — yet. While I have blogged on and off for over a year, it is only recently that I committed to resurrecting a writing career that I abandoned years ago in favor of law, teaching, and clerical positions. Julie Powell has inspired me to re-connect with my passion for writing. (My review of Julie & Julia for Suite101.com won an Editor’s Choice Award there: http://bit.ly/Ce5u7.)

If chosen, I would definitely take off work to attend, because it would mean so much to me, and because I could not stand the pain of being cut off from the world if you came and poured wine on my keyboard! My husband has promised he can make do with out me for a couple of days, my cats don’t really care as long as they’re fed, and my boss is on vacation anyway, so the timing is perfect — all I need is for you to choose me!

And even more importantly, I would promise to stick with whatever word limit you gave me for the guest blogging piece — despite the fact that I didn’t manage to stay under 100 words here!

  14. Jason L. Cheung — 7/6/09 @ 3:49 pm

    It’s gotta be Yee!

    Send Lorna Yee! (Please?)

  15. bc — 7/6/09 @ 3:49 pm

I vote for Meg Blocker too :)

  16. Leslie Novosel — 7/6/09 @ 3:49 pm

    Dear Ms. McSteamy,

Gary Novosel was born for this job! Not only does he know a TON about food, he is a fabulous writer and totally fun (just like you)! I’d bet our firstborn he’ll do you proud!!

If you want to meet Gary via video, check out his stint on the show “Jayni’s Kitchen”. His personality definitely comes through in this piece. http://www.foodmedic.com/?p=1075

Example of Gary’s “funness” – This weekend my son and 5 of his LSU buds came to visit us in Austin. They challenged Gary to do an episode of “Chopped”. Gary gave the kids his credit card and off they went to gather the secret ingredients. Being boys, they focused on protein, lots of protein. …leg of lamb, duck, a huge hunk of tuna, and scallops. Even though Gary was being timed, teased, abused, and cooking for 8, he pulled it off beautifully!

If you pick my guy I will personally massage your feet for a month. Seriously, I can’t think of anyone more deserving than Gary (First responder who rescued and fed Katrina victims, feeds the homeless, and volunteers his cooking services for good causes.)

Thank you so much for considering! :-)

    Leslie

  17. I used to live in California, and to be able to return there reveling in my passion of food blogging, and get the star treatment would be a gift beyond words.

I can relate to Julie in that food blogging brought me back to life. When I moved to Tennessee and went on my first grocery store trip, I had to tell the check-out gal what each produce was. I left the store, and cried, feeling that I left food culture behind in California.

I would love to go. Cleared schedule.

  18. Peter — 7/6/09 @ 4:01 pm

Gotta be Alejandra at Always Order Dessert.

    She’s awesome!

  19. Anna — 7/6/09 @ 4:04 pm

Ooh, what an amazing opportunity! If my life weren’t already crazy at the moment (and I weren’t horribly underqualified) love to try to go, but instead I’ll cast my vote at Alejandra of Always Order Dessert. She’s a fantastic writer, great cook and would be the perfect correspondent.

  20. Matt O'Keefe — 7/6/09 @ 4:05 pm

Alejandra (over at alwaysorderdessert.com) is exactly who you are looking for as her interests and abilities lie at the nexus of food, cinema, photography, and writing. Alejandra brings people together with her love of food and her keen eye for detail will entertain and enlighten your readers.

On a personal note, I haven’t seen my friend in too long and I would be happy to get her to the Kogi truck. I’ve been wanting to share KogiBBQ with Alenadra since I first went last year!

  21. Brian Hartman — 7/6/09 @ 4:05 pm

Lorna Yee is getting my vote.

  22. Ana — 7/6/09 @ 4:05 pm

  26. Dave — 7/6/09 @ 4:14 pm

Meg Blocker is your choice and only choice. Witty, urbane, and the ultimate Foodie. Whenever Meg speaks of food, I always listen and find her passion for the topic as well as her delivery as good as the food itself. She will represent your blog with the utmost professionalism and dazzle you with her observations and pics from the premiere. Close your eyes, envision the best meal of your life and then think, “Meg Blocker — but of course!” You won’t be disappointed.

  27. Andrea — 7/6/09 @ 4:19 pm

Please choose Gary Novosel, Austin, TX, to go to LA to blog for you. He has an excellent website that caters to people with medical dietary needs and he has helped many. I am in France now and plan to bring back to him many special ingredients, including truffles,to further compliment his many wonderful recipes. Gary is super generous, cooking for others, ill or healthy, and sharing his ideas and hints. He grows most of his vegetables himself, which is quite a feat to be done in Austin! Choose Gary, you won’t be disappointed!

I adore Julia Child. Her passion, perfectionism and love of hot dogs speak to me. I have a quote by Julia hung on the wall at my bakery. Through it, I’ve experienced Julia’s broad appeal everyday.

I identify with Julie. I too have laid it all on the line to chase the dream. Will it be worth it? Who knows as my story is still being written. I would love to include this experience as a chapter in my story. To that end, I will care for it with wit, enthusiasm, and conviction.
