About Epicurean

In 1997, fellow Minnesotans Tony Ciardelli and brothers Dave and Greg Benson formed Minneapolis-based TrueRide, a skate park-design and construction company that gave shape to hand-built, custom municipal skate ramps of the highest quality.

Two years later, TrueRide needed to expand its manufacturing facilities, and moved to Duluth, on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Fueled by a fierce desire to work for themselves and guided by a distinctly un-corporate company mantra borrowed from a Bob Dylan song—“When something’s not right, it’s wrong”—the three men embarked on an entrepreneurial voyage that would take them far beyond skate parks.

Staying true to the cultures of conservation and creativity, the team sought to develop a use for the excess material produced in manufacturing skating surfaces. Once they determined that cutting boards and outdoor furniture each required uncommonly durable construction goods, Epicurean and Loll Designs were established.

By 2003, having honed a two-pronged focus on modern design and ethical business behavior, Epicurean and Loll continued to grow. After rehabbing an 80-year-old factory—sheathing its exterior in the same tough material used to make Epicurean’s cutting boards—and cleaning up its brownfield site, the two enterprises had a new home, dubbed Hawksboots. It’s here that heartfelt, original designs; pro-environmental practices; and truly unique materials are brought together in innovative, functional and thoughtful products that are made in America and distributed worldwide.
