Fierce

Coco *loves* the hens….she considers them, “things to chase around” — the hens don’t like Coco much and normally squawk, freak out and run away. Lately, Fireflapper, our golden sex link hen, created a new strategy.

“Aha! a chicken to chase!”

Chase! Chase!

Instead of flapping wings and running to the coop, Fireflapper steps aside, stays put, right where she is and lets Coco, who thinks Fireflapper is going to run, pass on by.

“Uh oh. where’d she go?”

Right behind ya, Coco!

Fireflapper chases Coco, pecks her in the butt.

“Hi hen friend! Wanna play again?”

“Wanna play? Wanna play? huhhuhuh???”

“Come ‘on, let’s play!”

*peck*

ouch.

“Yeah, chase THIS you dumb dog!”

  1. LOL!! That is awesome. I love the live action running shot of the chicken chasing the dog. Hilarious!! Thanks for sharing your “farm antics”. :)

    Happy Thursday!

That’s hilarious! Fireflapper sure showed Coco! Thanks, I needed a good laugh this morning.

  4. I keep thinking we should get a dog to keep chicken predators at bay… These pictures are so hilarious. Love them!

  5. annbb — 1/19/12 @ 11:31 am

Thanks for the laugh! This would make a great (and most likely viral) youtube video.

  6. Conni — 1/19/12 @ 11:41 am

That is great!!! I so miss having hens. I can’t wait til we move back down to the lower 48, so we can have our country life again.

  7. JulieD — 1/19/12 @ 11:46 am

That is totally awesome, Coco deserves it! :)

  8. Allison — 1/19/12 @ 11:55 am

    Ha too funny!

  9. Love it – she reminds me of a bull-fighter!! My chickens are totally indifferent to the cats and dog, but their run is also fenced in and the door shut when the other animals are around!

  10. Bev Weidner — 1/19/12 @ 1:04 pm

That. Is. The. Best. Thing. Ever. In. This. World.

  11. nicole — 1/19/12 @ 1:05 pm

That is hilarious!! Gray stormy day today and needed a cheer; could not have been better, thanks. Will have to send this to my daughter who has dog like yours’. And chickens.

  16. Elizabeth Scheller — 1/19/12 @ 11:00 pm

  17. Sonnda — 1/20/12 @ 7:25 am

Brilliant Jaden, that made me laugh so much!

  18. Wendy W. — 1/20/12 @ 8:43 am

Too funny!! My dog does the same with the “ghetto kitties” who sometimes sleep in our yard – he’ll charge at them barking up a ferocious storm, but when he gets too close THEY chase HIM – and he takes off with his tail tucked between his legs, yipping like he’s been mortally wounded. I love him silly, but bless his fuzzy heart, he’s not the brightest crayon in the box :)

  19. chrissy — 1/20/12 @ 4:05 pm

HA! my german shorthair pointer and barred rock carry on like this all the time. she will not bow to his size. they are equals. he’s the boss of all the birds except sue ellen.

  20. Rene — 1/21/12 @ 1:25 pm

Our birds need to learn that trick! Our dogs still get them to run and flap.

    Sooo funny!

  21. Shira — 1/21/12 @ 1:56 pm

    Hillarious!

  22. Chris — 1/21/12 @ 3:07 pm

That is hilarious….poor “hen pecked” Coco.

  23. Judy — 1/22/12 @ 8:13 am

I wonder what type of dog that is. Looks just like mine but we don’t know where she came from. Great chicken though, I wish mine would do that. They just scatter all about. My dogs think they are bowling pins!

  24. rose — 1/23/12 @ 8:27 am

coco just want to play! they all grew up together and been introduced to one another quite young. one of my chickens didn’t fare well. cloud, my samoyed ended killing her, but after that we had a “real” talk, and cloud ended his preying behavior. now he is their protector.

I am so excited to get my chickens this Spring, well my chicks. I have no clue how the dogs will react. I have no doubt the chickens will stand there ground. I am really excited, been working on plans the last few weeks. I will have to go back to your post when you first got the chickens and read that again. I don’t think I will start off with a Rooster.. 29. Cathj — 2/8/12 @ 8:02 am

    Lol… :D

  30. sarina — 2/8/12 @ 12:24 pm

Oh.. haha.. I wish my free range roosters would try this! My lab puppy likes to chase them and make them go all flappy flappy. He has no real interest in actually CATCHING one (unlike the Jack Russell who would start at the tail keep chewing till it reached the beak). He will dive into the middle of them pecking creating quite the dust up. then sit there all self important that he got THEM to MOVE. Right now, he has to deal with a baby chick living “in the upstairs apartment” (in a box on top of his cage).. so he is peeped to sleep:)

  31. Murasaki Shikibu — 2/11/12 @ 3:09 am

This really made me laugh. It reminded me of the time my pet rooster chased my cocker spaniel around the chico tree! Dogs can be such cowards sometimes. ;)

  32. Kim in MD — 2/13/12 @ 8:07 am

This gave me a good laugh this morning, Jaden! It also makes me wish I could have chickens!

  33. michelle — 2/13/12 @ 1:04 pm

Love this we had a red sex link who regularly chases the barn cat! I also have an old white silkie rooster who chases the stray cats away for their food! Got to love the country life!

  34. Laura — 2/21/12 @ 10:05 pm

I’m not sure why but this blog is loading very slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a problem on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.

  37. Beside cocking recipes it is good to see these pictures of pets. Which are having fun and enjoy every bit of it by following each other… This is very cool stuff capture in pictures… Cheers..

  38. Amber Rositter — 5/31/12 @ 9:19 pm

It’s really amazing how the hen protect her eggs/chicks. There’s some animals really such as dogs love to chase them.
